Nadi Astrology is a centuries-old Tamil tradition in which the life details of an individual — past, present and future — are believed to have been inscribed by ancient sages onto dried palm leaves, long before that person was born. Each leaf is written in classical Tamil verse and stored in bundles called kandams, with every kandam addressing one area of life: family, marriage, career, health and more.

What sets Nadi apart from other forms of astrology is retrieval rather than calculation. Instead of casting a horoscope from a birth chart, the reader locates the bundle that already carries your details, using a thumb impression as the identifying key — right thumb for men, left thumb for women.

The palm leaf itself, or Olaisuvadi, is prepared from palmyra leaves, dried, cut into strips and inscribed with a sharp iron stylus. A hole is punched through each strip so leaves belonging to the same bundle can be threaded together on a cord, which is why Nadi archives are preserved as bound stacks rather than loose sheets.

A typical session begins with identifying the correct bundle through a set of confirmation questions, followed by the astrologer reading the verses aloud and translating them from classical Tamil, kandam by kandam.

Career-related questions are among the most common reasons people seek a Nadi reading. The relevant kandam typically addresses the broad direction of one's working life, along with the periods when growth, change or setbacks are indicated, framed in terms of favourable and unfavourable timing rather than fixed dates.

Marriage delay is another frequently asked-about topic. The marriage kandam is read to identify the general period during which marriage is indicated, along with any doshas — astrological afflictions such as Chevvai (Kuja) dosha — that Tamil tradition associates with delay, usually alongside a suggested parihara.

With more families having members studying or working overseas, questions about foreign settlement have become a regular part of consultations too. Planetary placements involving Rahu and the twelfth house are commonly read for confirmation and likely timing.
